THURSDAY 17/6/13

From the sublime to the ridiculous.. Yesterday Yad Vashem & tonight Layla Lavan, White Night!

It’s 1:45am & we’ve just arrived back after walking the streets for about 5 hours, (except for a dinner break at Dr. Shakshuka.)
I can hear the music & voices as I lie in bed. The streets at this moment are still packed with people, more so than in the middle of the day. On the tayellet mainly large groups of young people are roaming around.
We started off in Jaffa where there were street markets, bands playing on each corner, street performers & thousands of people of all ages including families with lots of kids, toddlers & babies. It was great fun!
We walked from there to the Old Tachana where they had a massive singalong. Once again thousands of people sitting & standing, & all singing. It was so nice to see & hear, especially because the people were mainly our age group & older.
By the time we walked from there to Bialik Street, the festivities had just finished there & people were flocking away from the area.
So we headed for Gordon beach tayellet where there was Israeli Dancing. It had started at 9pm & we arrived well after midnight. There were lots of people but we just watched because we’d already walked for miles & I was wearing Fittflops, not suitable for dancing. But all the regulars were there, as well as lots & lots of passers by. Apparently it was going till 2am (which is now!)
As we walked back from there along the tayellet, there were throngs of young people everywhere. I said to Jeffrey that had we been in Melbourne city, I would have been scared & uncomfortable..
In fact we did comment that White Night TLV was more about music & dance. Whereas Melbourne White Night was also about lighting up the buildings etc. & making the City beautiful.
Anyway, it’s 25 degrees at the moment so it was a beautiful night for walking, & walking, & walking…
